Rainy Day Reds: Cozy Up with These Delicious Bottles
It’s one of those gray, rainy days here in Cooperstown—the kind that makes you grateful it’s not snowing (yet). When the sky is pouring and there’s nothing pressing on the agenda, I love nothing more than curling up on the couch with a cozy blanket, a great movie, my pups by my side, and of course, a rich bottle of red wine to sip on.
If you’re in the same mood, I’ve got three reds in the shop that are perfect for days like this. Each one has its own personality and price point, so whether you’re splurging or keeping it casual, I’ve got you covered.

1. Department 66 "Others" Red Blend
Let’s start with a bold, brooding beauty from the South of France. "Others" is crafted by Dave Phinney, the winemaker behind cult favorites like The Prisoner and Orin Swift wines. (Side note: If anyone wants to gift me a bottle of Mercury Head, I will not say no.)
This blend of Grenache, Mourvèdre, Carignan, and Syrah is everything I want in a rainy day red—deep, intense, and comforting. The color alone is mesmerizing—a dark, inky ruby, probably one of the deepest hues I’ve ever seen in a glass. Lush notes of red and black fruits jump out of the glass, with broad, smooth tannins that coat your palate and make you feel instantly relaxed.
Pair it with: Steak, burgers, chili, or any red meat you’ve got in the fridge. This one wants to hang out with bold flavors and hearty fare.

2. Bogle Heritage Red Blend
If you’re looking for a solid, everyday red that delivers far more than its price tag suggests, look no further than Bogle’s Heritage Red Blend. Honestly, give me Bogle any day of the week—Phantom, Juggernaut, and their core line all overdeliver. Their Cabernet is finally tasting right again (shoutout to 2018 for still being the GOAT).
This blend is 60% Zinfandel and 40% Petite Sirah, giving it structure and spice in equal measure. It’s rich with dark fruit, hints of licorice, and that earthy, smoky pipe tobacco note that makes you want to slow down and savor it.
Pair it with: Fennel-crusted rack of lamb, truffle mushroom pizza, or lamb chops with roasted sweet potatoes. Comfort food with a little flair.

3. The Offering Red Blend
Now, if you’re in the mood to treat yourself, The Offering from Paso Robles is worth every penny. This Rhone-style blend of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvèdre brings serious elegance and complexity to the glass. Inspired by the classic blends of France’s Rhône Valley, this California version delivers big on flavor and finesse.
Expect flavors of muddled raspberries, savory herbs like thyme, and even a bit of graphite minerality. The finish is fresh, balanced, and endlessly drinkable. It’s one of those wines that lingers in all the right ways.
Pair it with: Korean BBQ, jerk chicken, or a blue cheese smash burger. You want big, bold, slightly funky flavors to match the layers in this wine.
And yes, while it’s the priciest of the three at $31.99, I’ve seen multiple wine reviewers compare it to bottles that retail in the $50+ range—so it’s a great value for what you’re getting.
Rainy days don’t have to be gloomy. They can be cozy, comforting, and just the excuse you need to open something new and delicious. Stop by the shop if you need help choosing your perfect bottle—and don’t forget to tag me in your rainy day wine pics. I love seeing what everyone’s sipping!
Stay dry & drink well. 🍷
